The Atmosphere of IdeaBase: Sarah Holzer’s Story

Hi! My name is Sarah Holzer and I’m a senior Visual Communications Design major. I started working at IdeaBase in the summer of 2015. It counted as my internship, but I will be continuing to work here throughout the fall. I’m lucky to have a lot of friends that work at IdeaBase, which is how I heard they were hiring for the summer.

There are a lot of things I like about VCD, the main one being that I (obviously) get to be creative and I get to study a hobby of mine and make it a career. I also really like the community within VCD. The students in the program have become some of my best friends and it’s awesome to have classes with them.

IdeaBase has definitely helped prepare me for my future career in graphic design. My main takeaway so far is learning how to work directly with clients. My first week here I had to present logo concepts to a client and that isn’t an experience I would have learned in a classroom.

If I had to choose a favorite thing about IdeaBase it would have be the sense of community. I feel pretty lucky to honestly be able to say I like every single person that I work with, and it’s nice to feel comfortable enough to ask for help if you need it. A lot of places can be competitive and people may be scared to ask questions, but IdeaBase is never like that. It’s a very collaborative and helpful environment.

Beyond IdeaBase and my studies I love gardening. I’m currently growing a lemon tree and an apple tree. My apartment is also filled with lots of plants. I think that’s one of the best ways to make a house a home. I also really like yoga and puppies, but who doesn’t love puppies!

After graduation, I plan on working at an advertising agency or design firm in Pittsburgh. I want to save some money and move to New York City, as soon as I can afford it, so I can further my career there. Hopefully soon I’ll be happily working in New York with a new puppy and lots of plants!
