Shelby Muter, Senior, IdeaBase Student Designer

Upon graduation, Shelby Muter plans to attend graduate school and pursue a Masters of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in design. Muter’s knowledge of IdeaBase was from previous students who had worked there. She was also interested in acquiring an internship before graduation and was able to do this at IdeaBase. Muter’s desire to attend Kent State University stemmed from her interest in pursuing Visual Communication Design. Because of her talent, she received a partial scholarship to help pay for her studies.

One place Muter would go if she were not in school is the beach. She explained “I’ve always wanted to live at the beach but I think most people do. I would love to learn how to surf and scuba dive. Anything related to the ocean.”

The last three years, I’ve grown tremendously, both as a designer and a young woman.

WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DO YOU DO BESIDES SCHOOL AND IDEABASE?

“Whenever I’m not working or in class, I like to spend time with my family and friends. I’m also really passionate about photography. I’ve probably taken more photos at the West Side Market than anywhere else. I love capturing the authentic, hardworking people and obviously the food!”

WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY BEEN LIKE?

"I wasn’t exactly sure what I was getting myself into or if I would even be successful when I decided to pursue a degree in design at Kent State University. The last three years, I’ve grown tremendously, both as a designer and a young woman. I’ve become successful and have found talents and traits that I was unaware of. Finding confidence in myself and the work that I produce has been challenging at times, though."
