Beyond the Beans: Life of a Coffee Roaster and User Experience Designer: Christopher Uhler

My name is Chris Uhler and I’m a user experience designer at IdeaBase. I’m also a graduate student in Kent State’s user experience design program.

IdeaBase has been a great opportunity for gaining real-world experience. Personally, I’ve been learning a ton from my manager Chris Hallahan. He is a super awesome resource, and it’s truly rewarding to be able to work on a project the whole way through.

Before I started at IdeaBase in March, I actually had no idea this place even existed until my co-worker at Bent Tree Coffee Roasters told me about it. I’ve been working at Bent Tree (also here in Kent) for two years as a Production Manager, but I’m glad I found out about IdeaBase because it’s a great starting point for my future in the User Experience Design field.

My main client right now is Northeast Ohio Medical University. I am working on a competitive analysis for them in support of their future website redesign. A competitive analysis is basically the process of looking at similar websites and analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. I’ve also created and sent out a survey to get feedback on the current site, and I’ll be analyzing the data when the survey closes.

I stay super busy with work and school, but in my spare time I enjoy photography, home brewing, and my motorcycle. Recently, I made a Kolsch brew, which is a light, sweet beer. I think it turned out pretty well. I needed a break from the heavy stuff, and this was a nice alternative.

Right now, I’m just super excited to get married in the fall. My fiancé and I have been together about 5 years. We actually met at Kent State, and have been together ever since.

Overall, I am just excited for the experience at IdeaBase. I know I will be able to learn a lot here and can use this experience as a good foundation for my future.
